Having lived on a farm during her childhood, Ms. Daphne is no stranger to growing her own fruits and vegetables. A resident of Bryan, TX, Ms. Daphne has had her garden for about 6 years. Ms. Daphne has an extensive collection of crops: including curly kale, Swiss chard, onions, red bell peppers, and chiltepin peppers, which are Texas’ official native peppers.

Unfortunately, Ms. Daphne’s garden has been visited by a few unwelcome slimy guests: snails (specifically, brown garden snails). They nibbled on some of her red bell peppers’ leaves, left behind holes, and caused the leaves to turn yellow, as shown in the image to the right. In addition to being a successful gardener, especially as she has overcome the challenge of snails, Ms. Daphne is also an innovator. She has been working with raised garden beds made of old filing cabinets. Rather than bending down to tend to her garden, she has brought it up to her and can easily work in it while standing. This method of gardening is ideal for those who cannot kneel or use their knees for prolonged periods of time.
Up next for Ms. Daphne is the start of a new project that will entail growing tomato seedlings.
